The gardens, created by Capital Broadcasting Company founder, A.J. Fletcher, first opened to the public in 1951, three years after WRAL-TV went on the air. The site underwent a major renovation during the early 2000s. In 2003, the WRAL-TV Gardens received the Tree & Landscape Conservation award from the 21st Annual Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Community Appearance.

Featured plants include azaleas, dogwoods, and a collection of hydrangeas. There also are several kinds of rhodendendron, which are common to mountain regions but seldom are found this far east in North Carolina.

The gardens, which encompass 5 acres, are a popular backdrop for bridal portraits.

Special notes:
*No Smoking
*No Pets.
*No rest rooms (but there are several fast-food restaurants within a few blocks).
*Open year round from dawn to dusk.
*Benches are located at intervals along the paths.

Parking is free, and there is no admission to the gardens.

To reach from the I-440 Beltline on the west side of Raleigh, take Exit 2 (Western Boulevard). Go east about 1.5 miles to the intersection with Avent Ferry Road. Continue straight ahead on Western Blvd one block and turn right on Nazereth Street. The large parking lot will be on your right. Follow the directional signs to the Garden Parking area.
