100 million years ago a volcano occured at this location. The magma from deep within the earth came to the surface. In the magma were diamonds that had formed in the mantle depths, where terrific heat and pressure had allowed the carbon atoms to bond.
In 1906, John Huddlestone found the first diamond at this site. In 1972 the State of Arkansas purchased the property and turned it into a state park. Now, for a slight fee, you can search for and possibly find a diamond. Any that you find, you can keep. There are other minerals that can be found here also. Parking is nearby.
