The Sun Petroglyph is located in the Outdoor Exhibit area at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles, Oregon. I was attending an Art Exhibit about the Missoula Ice Age Floods by artist Stev H. Ominski on Saturday, May 5, 2007. I wandered outside to see the model of the Columbia River when I saw the petroglyph.I went to the information desk. The woman told me that she had done rubbings of petroglyphs in the Columbia River Gorge until it was against the law. She has worked at the center for two years and was not aware that the petroglyph was there. So I took her outside and showed her where it was located. She said that she thought it was just a large rock and had never looked at it closely from the other side.
I do not know who made the drawings, or why. Some are thousands of years old, perhaps made by the First People (tribes). Some images, like the sun or deer, are obvious, but I do not know what some of the others mean.
The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center is open 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.
