This marker reads:
"In 1879, property owners in the Longwood area organized a fire department to protect their buildings. Its first headquarters was in a stable, but after it became a chemical engine company that used chemical extinguishers, a new, safer building was commissioned from the noted Boston architectual firm Peabody & Stearns. The downstairs of this shingle-style building housed horses and the chemical engine; the driver and his family lived upstairs. The adjoining park was the site of the Longwood School (demolished 1939)."
Currently, the building, on Monmouth near St Marys, is home to the Brookline Arts Center.

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
