The Thomas Jefferson Library is one of the libraries for the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL). The St. Louis Mercantile Library is a subscription library which allows limited access to the public. The Mercantile Library, founded in 1848, it is the oldest library west of the Mississippi River. It has an extensive selection of material on the history of Western Expansion, besides being a research library it is also a museum with many paintings and sculptures.
