One of only nine surviving covered bridges in Maine, the 116-foot Hemlock Bridge in Freyburg, built in 1857, is considered one of the earliest examples of the Paddleford truss with arch type of consruction, spanning the old course of the Saco River.

Hemlock Bridge, built in 1857, is a 109 foot Paddleford truss strengthened with laminated wooden arches. The bridge was reinforced to carry local traffic in 1988. It is located three miles northwest of East Fryeburg over an old channel of the Saco River.
It is considered to be the oldest surviving example of the Paddleford Truss system used in a Maine covered bridges, and was designated as a Maine Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers on January 17, 2002.
Access to this bridge is over dirt roads that are not maintained in the winter.
There is also a very difficult traditional geocache at this site.
