J.M. Brownsen, this school’s namesake, was a prominent merchant, founding Victoria’s first bank. This was the ‘white’ high school for Victoria Independent School District, erected in 1905.

This building is now an art studio. The bronze portrait of J.M. Brownsen above the door resembles Vladamir Lenin. If you would like to see Victoria’s interpretation of the ‘separate but equal’ doctrine, compare this beautifully detailed school to the rather plain Colored High School.
