The first scientific excavation occured in 1890 which discovered that the burial chamber had already been robbed in antiquity.

Further archeological excavations took place between 1970 and 1973 during which 126 secondary burials were discovered.

In 1975, the mound was restored to its present state.

The burial chamber and a selection of finds can be found in the Franziskanermuseum of Villingen-Schwenningen.
