The Rhododendron Species Foundation was formed in 1964 as a museum for the preservation and display of rhododendrons. The garden contains one of the largest rhododendron collections in the world and is a depository for endangered species of the shrub.

In 1974 Weyerhaueser donated this 24 acre site. The foundation is supported solely through admission fees, donations and the sale of plants.
