Many years ago, this was a store outside of town. To attract customers traveling on the busy road to Yosemite National Park, they built a big neon sign.

Times have changed. In the last 15 years, Manteca has trippled its size and big grocery store chains have moved into town, but Pete is still there, selling everything from tooth paste to tri tip, barbecued right in front of the store. With the location now being almost downtown, there is not much need for a sign anymore. That's why it is in relatively poor condition.
