The Baldwin apple, now relatively unknown in commercial agriculture, was once a very popular cultivar. It was on this site in Wilmington, Massachusetts, that the first example of it was discovered. The monument at this site (with a stone apple atop it) reads:

"This monument marks the site of the first Baldwin apple tree found growing wild near here. It fell in the gale of 1815. The apple first known as the Butters, Woodpecker, or Pecker apple was named after Col. Loammi Baldwin of Woburn.
"Erected in 1895 by the Rumford Historical Association."

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
