One hundred and seventeen years ago, on Whit Monday, 1881, Skegness Pier, which was said to be the finest in England, was opened for the first time. Described as "stretching far into the German Ocean," it was 1843 feet long, 25ft. wide, and was to become the fourth longest Pier in England. Today, it is still the resort's most famous feature, and people from all over the country on seeing its picture, will immediately couple it with Skegness. The construction of the Pier was due to the foresight of the 9th Earl of Scarbrough who was responsible for planning Skegness as a holiday resort.
