Long Description:
Saline County Courthouse was built 1882. The courthouse replace an earlier courthouse destroyed by fire in April 3, 1881. Slater was competing for the county seat, and each community accused the other of arson. The courthouse destroyed by fire had been closed in 1879 and was already slated to be replaced less than ten years after being constructed due to the poor workmanship when it built. The first courthouse in Marshall was destroyed by fire in August 1864 as a result of Civil War activity.

The current courthouse was designed by architect John C. Cochrane of Chicago. The design has a cross gable design for the roof and is the same design as Cochrane used for a courthouse in Lake County, Indiana. The building was built by John Volk and Co., Rock Island, Illinois. The initial bid was $51,762 which was increased by $5,000 when local bricks could not procured and bricks were shipped in.

The building continues to to serve as the Courthouse for Saline County.
