The Hannibal Railroad Bridge was originally built as a swing bridge in 1871 for the Wabash Railroad. It spans the Mississippi River at Hannibal. In 1994 the bridge was converted to vertical lift bridge using a relocated 406 ft. long lift span from a bridge spanning the Tennessee River at Florence, Alabama. The lift span floated-out of the Florence, Alabama bridge and along with the towers, dismantled, stripped of lead paint, and coated with zinc paint before being barge loaded. The bridge span was barged down the Tennessee River and up the Mississippi River to Hannibal for erection. At Hannibal new foundations were placed in preparation for new vertical lift span. The towers were erected without significant rail outages. The swing span was removed and new lift span placed in 17.5 hours and the bridge was operational within the allotted 3 day period. The bridge is currently owned and operated by Norfolk Southern Railroad.
