The bridge has been built in 1364 during reign of emperor Charles IV. An important trade route connecting Prague with Saxonian cities of Plauen and Erfurt ran through it.
It has burned down several times (in 1576, 1742 and 1986). The last reconstruction took place in 2001-2003.
