The current station was built in 1918 to replace a wooden station that had burned. It was built by/for the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is not a typical SP station, but does give a sense that Salem is a Capitol City. The station has seen continuous passenger trains since it was opened. It is currently served by Amtrak. The Coast Starlight between Seattle and Los Angeles stops here every day in both directions. There are also 2 Northbound Cascade Trains to Seattle in the morning, and 2 southbound Cascade Trains to Eugene in the evening. Amtrak Thruway busses also stop here.
