The history of the capitol building is entwined with the establishment of Montana as a state and the greed associate with the many gold deposits of the late 1800s.

In choosing Helena as the capitol city the government was swayed with bribes. The capitol building architect and builders were also influenced by bribery which came to light in later years.

Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tours on the hour.
No tours Sundays through Fridays and Holidays.

Historical Monuments/Memorials:
1902 Murals created by Charles Marion Russell, Ralph Earll DeCamp, F. Pedrelli & Sons, Edgar Samuel Paxson, and Amedee Joullin were added throughout the building. 1905 a Statue of Acting Territorial Governor Thomas Francis Meagher was installed near the front entrance. 1911 Statue of Wilbur Fisk Sanders- founder of the Historical Society of Montana- was added. 1930-Bust of Thomas J. Walsh, renowned Attorney who lead the investigation int the Teapot Dome scandal added. 1971- bust of Joseph M. Dixon Montana Govenor 1921-1925, credited with changing Montana tax codes was added. 1977- a bust of Burton K Wheeler- opponent of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company was added. 1985- Statue of Jeannette Rankin, proponent of womens rights, was added. 2001- a state of Revered statesman Mike Mansfield and his wife Maureen was added.
