Prince Charming Regal Carrousel dates back to 1917 when it was known as Liberty Carousel. It was manufactured by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for Palace Gardens in Detroit. After a 1928 rehab, it moved to Olympic Park in Maplewood, NJ where it stayed until the park closed in the mid-1960s. Disney's Imagineers found out about the carousel in 1967 and rescued it from almost certain demolition. It underwent a painstaking restoration and was put in place behind Cinderella Castle when the park opened in 1971.

The original decor of the carousel had a very patrotic theme and included a Lady Liberty figure amongst the horses. All 72 original horses were restored and several others were purchased to bring the total to 90. Walt insisted that everyone on this carousel should have a horse. As a result, four chariots were removed. After a 1997 renovation, the original chariots were added back in, bringing the number of horses back to 86. On June 1, 2010, the carrousel was renamed from Cinderella's Golden Carrousel to its current name of Prince Charming Regal Carrousel.
