The Blair County Ballpark is located in Altoona, PA, a town built on the railroad industry. The "Curve" name was chosen for the team, with ties to both baseball and the world famous "Horseshoe Curve". Groundbreaking started on the ballpark in March 1998, and by April 15, 1999 the all new Altoona Curve baseball team started playing in their new stadium. Seating in the stadium holds 7,210; but the largest crowd was 9,255 including standing room only. Pittsburgh Penquins' Mario Lemieux, and Pittsburgh Steelers' Jerome Bettis are among a group of partners that own the team. The Altoona Curve have appeared in the first series Eastern League Playoffs in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Their only Championship appearance to date was in 2004, they unfortunately lost. Before and during games, you will find the Mascots (Steamer and Diesel), players and staff out and about chatting with the fans. Interviews play on the jumbotron before the game, while fans search out their favorite game snacks at the many vendor counters. The ballpark features a little of everything, with a variety of food, drink, games and contests for everyone to participate in. And then there are the post-game fireworks displays... all within a beautiful stadium. I am honored to have a hand in the games at the ballpark. I work for a local printing company that produces the program books for each game. The staff has been wonderful to work with (even with me pestering to make deadlines - if you are reading this - thanks guys!). Famous first pitches have been made by Jerome Bettis, Mario Lemieux, and on July 4th, 2004 - Vice President Dick Cheney! Many of the Curve's players in the past 5 years have moved on to the big leagues and now play for the Pirates. Current Pirates that once played for the Curve include (but not limited to): Brad Eldred, Craig Wilson, Jack Wilson and Rob Mackowiak.
