Photo from USGS Preston County Report circa 1912

This well-preserved furnace is located adjacent to Preston County Route 2 (Wymp’s Gap Road) near the Lake O’Woods community. Old Valley Furnace was built about 1837 by Andrew Ochiltree, and James Caldwell operated it between two and three years. This furnace had ores sufficient, but long transportation and want of capital caused it to close. The furnace is on private property, but can easily be viewed from the roadside.
