Pope John Paul II (May 18, 1920 - April 5, 2005) reigned as pope of the Catholic church from 1978 until his death in 2005. During his reign, he visited over 100 countries making him one of the most-travelled world leaders in history. He is often credited as one of the forces behind the fall of communism in Eastern Europe. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 and named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influenial people of the 20th century in 1999. His funeral, in 2005, was attended by five kings, four queens, 70 presidents and prime ministers and 164 cardinals.
