Jackson Square has been the heart of Hamilton's downtown shopping since 1966.
According to the plaque at the entrance it states that the 43 acre site was an agreement between the City of Hamilton, Province of Ontario and Government of Canada. The location became the cultural centre not only for the people of Hamilton, but the surrounding areas as well.
It was through the vision and concepts of the mayor of Hamilton, Lloyd D Jackson for which this mall was named at its opening.
Today, Jackson Square struggles to survive as much of the population lives beyond the downtown area. Malls built near the new subdivisions have strangled this mall from succeeding.
During the daytime, the mall is usually quite busy, with people trying to get caught up on errands and such. There are several office towers attached to the mall as well as the main public library and Copps Colosseum.
Jackson Square does feature a large open air garden spanning most of the roof. It is accessible from multiple locations within the mall, as well as the library and surrounding streets. A great place to have your lunch or read a book.
Hope you enjoy the Waymark Visit!
