His citation reads "On board the destroyer U.S.S. Hopkins for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession on the occasion of the accident to one of the boilers of that vessel". His Medal was awarded to him on March 23, 1910. He was one of two sailors who were to earn the Medal of Honor for bravery at that event, the other being Chief Watertender Robert E. Bonney My attempts to discover the nature of the accident have so far proved futile. Certainly steam boilers by their very nature are prone to exploding and I am GUESSING that this is what occurred that day, but hopefully someone here can tell us the complete story. Also unknown to me is what a "watertender" in the US Navy was, but again I'm inclined to guess that it is related to boiler running and maintenance. A picture of me in the cemetery the day this was marked can be found in the Medal of Honor posting for Y.B. Rowdy.
