The monks here are part of the Order of Saint Benedict. The monastry was founded in 1598 by Simao Luis from Sao Vicente, Sao Paulo. Luis was a disciple of Father Jose de Anchieta. He was given the name Friar Mauro Teixeira.
On the grounds is also the College of Sao Bento.
