Long Description:The Daffodil Motel is located in Milton, Washington along Pacific
Highway (SR99). The Puyallup Valley (where Milton is located) is
famous for their huge fields of daffodils in March and April and it
is for this the motel is named for. Back in the 40’s the Daffodil
was a quiet place to stay as you travel along Highway 99. Lately it
was discovered to be a quiet place where cocaine and marijuana were
being stored as it traveled along I-5. There was also a murder at
the hotel a couple years ago, so trust me, this is probably not a
place you’d want to stay overnight. But pull off 99 and take a
quick peek at this glorious neon extravaganza.
The sign has been repainted in recent years, but I am not sure
if the neon and chaser lights still work.
State Route 99 goes by many names as it wanders its way from the
city of Fife near Tacoma to Everett: Pacific Highway, International
Boulevard, Marginal Way, Alaska Way Viaduct, Aurora Avenue and
probably a few that I’ve missed. It was the main Federal highway
(US99) linking Seattle and Tacoma until I-5 replaced it in the
1960’s.
All along the route you can see the neon remnants of the
highway’s golden years. Signs for motels, diners, bowling alley’s
and until 2005 a drive-in movie theater.
