Today's United Methodist Church of Geneva originated from the merger of the Emmanuel Methodist Church (1/2 block west) and the First Methodist Church (this building).

In 1850, a group of 79 members founded the First Methodist Church in the town of Geneva, on the banks of the Fox River. In 1872, construction started on a new building at the corner of Second & Hamilton Streets, which was dedicated in 1874.
Meanwhile, in 1871, Emmanuel Methodist Church was founded at the corner of First & James Streets to meet the needs of the area's growing Swedish population. Emmanuel Methodist Church built a new sanctuary in 1907 at the corner of Third & Hamilton -- on the other end of the same block of Hamilton.
The dissolution of the Methodist Church's Swedish Conferences, of which Emmanuel was a member, led to the merger of Emmanuel Methodist with First Methodist 1n 1948. With the merger of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren denominations, the church became United Methodist Church of Geneva in 1969.
Both church buildings were used by the church for a number of years, but eventually the Emmanuel Methodist Church building was sold and converted to commercial use, and today houses the Hi-Hat Resale Shop.
