The marker stands on the side of a building on the east corner of Chauncy and Summer Streets. On it is a picture of the gerrymander, as well as some text. The marker reads:
"Near this site stood the home of state senator Israel Thorndike, a merchant and privateer. During a visit here in 1812 by Governor Elbridge Gerry, an electoral district was redrawn to provide advantage to the party in office.
"Shaped by political intent rather than any natural boundaries, its appearance resembled a salamander. A frustrated member of the opposition called it a gerrymander, a term still in use today."

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
