This granite stone was placed as a memorial for victims of Piedmont Flight 22 that crashed in Hendersville, NC on July 19, 1967 after a midair collision with a private plane. There were 82 total fatalities, 74 passengers and 5 crew members on the Boeing 727 and 3 on the Cessna 310. John T. McNaughton, Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs and Robert McNamara's closest advisor, was a passenger on Flight 22, along with his wife and son. This was the first airplane crash to be investigated by the newly formed National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). This was and still is the worst mid-air collision in US Aviation history.
