Tres Ritos Lodge cabins are not the fanciest in the world, but they are located in one of the most beautiful places: the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

The pet policy on the website states that only pets under 40 lbs can stay and that they have to be leashed on the grounds and kenneled in the cabins. You have to put a $100 deposit down, and at the end of your stay you are reimbursed minus damages (minimum of $25). So basically, it costs an extra $25 to stay with your dog. No matter how long you stay.

The reality of the pet policy probably depends on how well-behaved your dog is, and whether you are visiting during peak seasons. During my stay in July 2006, they allowed my 45-50 pound border collie, Mazzy to stay in their cabins. The manager never said a word to me about not having a crate for her, although, I never left her in the cabin unattended, and in general seemed fairly unconcerned about the whole dog thing.

The cabin I stayed in seemed really large, had an equipped kitchen with all the utensils, two Queen size beds and a huge living area. The cabins are somewhat shabby as they are somewhat old, and there is no television, phone or radio, as well as, no cell phone reception in the area. It is a smoke-free environment. While the cabins have seen better days, mine was very clean and livable.

There is some great mountain stream trout fishing located right on the grounds, plenty of hiking and ATV trails all around, snow skiing,a small general store, and even a beaver dam (which turned out to be a great place to catch fish).

The rates range from $45 - $145/night for up to 4 people in a cabin. I thought that was extrememly reasonable. Also, I had to change my reservations several times, and at one point had to cancel, and the manager (I think his name was John), was super-nice about refunding my entire deposit. He is the only person who works there, so it is sometimes hard to catch him on the phone, but he is great about calling you back.

I enjoyed my stay in Tres Ritos Lodge, and my dog liked it as well. Directions to the lodge are on the web site.
