This garden was established in 1863 with the planting of an English oak tree.

It covers an area of 30 hectares (74 acres) with most of the garden area being within a loop of the Avon River. The original landscape, before the gardens were developed, were mostly wetlands and sand dunes. After development, is has been made into a place of beauty with one of the finest collections of exotic and indigenous plants to be found anywhere in New Zealand. Several of the majestic trees are in excess of 120 years, and form a wonderful background to the many plant collections and large, green lawns.

The coordinates are at a car entrance to the park, but there are many walk-in entrances around the entire perimeter.
Cost of entry: 0.00 (listed in local currency)
