Many a civilian and Civil War soldier quenched their thist at this location. It is located on the southwest corner of Court Square, the County seat of Rockingham County, the third largest county in Virginia.

Artist J. E. Taylor sketched the springhouse while traveling with Union Genral Phillip H. Sheridan's army in the fall of 1864.

Today, the spring is not as pure. As the sign says and the saying goes, "Don't Drink The Water". There is a public water fountain nearby. Springs abound on Court Square. Just behind where this photo was shot, you will very likely see a very active spring feeding Black's Run. This spring resides under the Lower Courts Building at 53 South Court Square. Also, a sump pump continually pumps water from a spring beneath the Masonic Temple at the corner of South Main and Water Streets.

Take away the electric light lines, wireless transmitters and horseless carriages, and you have a setting that will take you back in time.
