Rev. John F. Ford founded the Trenton church in 1827 with help of Olive Branch, the mother church. It was the first church built in Trenton in 1834; moved from Church Street and built on present side, 1870. Emphasizing Christian education, this church organized first Sunday School in Trenton in 1850; started Andrew College in 1852, the only Memphis Conference authorized school for men. Union forces used the college as Civil War hospital. The church sponsored the University School, later called Fitzgerald-Clarke, 1904-1916. Noted for its scholars, it was also the site of the first football game played in this section of Tennessee.
