Long Description:The sign says:
"In 1801 Josiah Bent, an enterprising sea captain, baked ship
bisquits in Dutch ovens located in his Milton home. These thin,
crisp bisquits made a crackling sound as they cooled, and Mr. Bent
aptly dubbed his creation "cracker" which became an original
American word. He sold his goods, the Bent Water Crackers, from his
saddlebag to ship merchants in Boston Harbor. In 1891 his grandson,
George H. Bent, continued the family business of baking the
world-reknowned Bent Water Cracker. The G. H. Bent factory
continues to manufacture Bent crackers, using time-honored
traditions and old-fashioned values. On February 10, 2000, the G.
H. Bent Factory was listed on the National Register of Historic
Places."
The factory is located on Pleasant Street, right at the corner
with Randolph Street (Rte 28) about 1/4 mile south of where Rte 28
bends sharply west.
There is a store at the place that sells deli and baked goods.
There are cakes and cookies, as well as the Bent Water Crackers,
used today in Civil War re-enactments.
