Ground Breaking for the stadium, then known as the SkyDome began October 3rd, 1986, with the Opening on June 3rd, 1989. Seating capacity is 50,598 in baseball configuration, 45,000 for football, with estimated 53,500 for the 2007 Grey Cup.

The original Astro Turf surface was replaced in 2005 with the more common Field Turf. In 2005 the original Jumbotron was replaced with a new screen that is one of the largest in the world.

While it is primarily a sports venue, Rogers Centre also hosts other large-scale events such as conventions, trade fairs, and concerts.

Rogers Centre is also noted for being the first stadium to have a fully-retractable motorized roof, as well as a 348-room hotel attached to it, with 70 rooms overlooking the field. It is also the most recent North American major-league stadium built to accommodate both football and baseball.
