Like the rest of his family, Louis is a trumpeter swan. But unlike his four brothers and sisters, Louis can't trumpet joyfully. In fact, he can't even make a sound. And since he can't trumpet his love, the beautiful swan Serena pays absolutely no attention to him.

Louis tries everything he can think of to win Serena's affection—he even goes to school to learn to read and write. But nothing seems to work. Then his father steals him a real brass trumpet. Is a musical instrument the key to winning Louis his love?

Concerned for his son, Louis's father takes desperate steps and steals a brass trumpet from a music store. Louis quickly learns how to play the instrument and is determined to pay back the storeowner. From playing reveille at a camp where young Sam is a junior counsellor, to entertaining passengers on a Boston riverboat, to a $500 a week job at a Philadelphia club, Louis's fame as a master trumpeter spreads. In return for a free musical concert at the Philadelphia zoo, he is even given board in the bird pond.
Louis is ready to return home and even more incredibly, Serena has unexpectedly flown back into his life - and fallen for him and the beautiful sounds he makes. But there's a problem, and to fix it he has to make a special deal with the zookeeper. The wealthy Louis now has enough money to pay back the storeowner, but before there can be a happy ending, one more near-tragic upset occurs. But to find out what that is , you will have to read the book.

Author's Name: E.B. White

Name of Waymarked Item: Trumpter swans in the Bird Pond of the Philadelphia Zoo

More Information:
Trumpet of the Swan: E. B. White was always fascinated with hatching of eggs. There is a sign at the Philadelphia Zoo showing were Serena and Louis courted. Philadelphia Orchestra performed the story in a concert. (That's why there are so many references on the web!) When E. B. White was invited to the first performance, he said that he'd only come if he could play an instrument. They called his bluff and offered to have him play the triangle - but he wiggled out of that "performance" too.
