The oppidum 'Heidengraben' is situated to the northeast of Bad Urach, on the northern edge of the Swabian Alb.It is here, at a fairly narrow point just south of Grabenstetten, that a peninsula-like plateau is connected to the elevated Alb-plain; the terrain is separated by steep slopes from the surrounding land which lies 200 to 300 meters beneath it. The 'Heidengraben' ('heathen ditch') is marked by a series of partly very well preserved rampart and ditch works. They are the remains of the former fortification which encloses a total area of about 1660 hectares, including the probable center of the settlement, the so-called 'Elsachstadt', with its 153 hectares.
