In this piece McMakin is pointing out the place where love and loss intersect - literally. McMakin often starts his work with some everyday image and then alters it in a surprising way. The result: making the familiar seem strange.
The piece consists of concrete letters, 2 benches, a reflecting pool, a table, and a tree. Together they spell the words "love" and "loss" intersecting and sharing the letter "o". Be sure to open the gallery for further explanations of the photographs.
McMakin has a strong following on the West Coast. He was born in Wyoming and was formerly based in Southern California, where he went to school. McMakin now lives in Seattle and heads a design company, Domestic Furniture/Domestic Architecture.
