Marker Name: Building a Legacy through the CCC
Marker Text: On a clear day, the view from here spans 70 miles of coast and 37 miles out to sea. Touted as the “best view on the Oregon Coast,” it’s no wonder the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) selected this site for the West Shelter. Construction work on this exposed headland was no picnic, but in the end, the men of the CCC crew left a legacy to their own hard work and craftsmanship.
More Mud, Bud!
For Oliver “Bud” Hinshaw, the West Shelter meant a Civilian Conservation Corps construction job. In 1934, Bud and a crew of five other men put muscle to rock, giving shape to the shelter that has been bracing the Cape Perpetua elements ever since.
Bud’s job was keeping the crew supplied with mortar - called mud - for the stonework. He also made coffee for the crew - he’d just dump ground coffee and water in a 3 1/2 gallon bucket and bring it to a boil.
The crew built the shelter during the winter. Sometimes it would storm so hard they’d have to huddle in a lean-to where a fire and Bud’s coffee kept them warm until conditions improved.
”I don’t think the project was so hard,” Bud said. “It was just a matter of having patience. That’s one thing I have.”
