This park was first set aside in 1788 as Place Gravier. It was renamed for the Marquis de Lafayette after he visited the city in 1825. Statues adorn the park, but none are of the park’s namesake. Benjamin Franklin guards the south entrance, and in the center stands Henry Clay, a favorite of Southerners. Since 1864, when famed bandleader Patrick S. Gilmore presented his legendary concert with a band of 500 and a choir of thousands, until this day, the square has been the site of concerts and other public events held under the shade trees.
