The North Carolina State Memorial was built to honor twenty-three infantry regiments, three cavalry regiments, three artillery batteries, and one infantry battalion all which participated in the Battle of Gettysburg.

The material used for the memorial is Standard Bronze, the contractor was A. Kunst Foundry, and the sculptor was Gutzon Borglum. The memorial cost about $50,000.
