MARKER TEXT: A short distance NW of here is the well-preserved cold blast furnace, named for James Buchanan. It was built in 1844; abandoned, 1858, due to lack of timber. At the time of its operation, the iron industry was very prosperous in Clarion County.
This is a traditional blue and gold roadside marker in Callensburg, on PA 58 about 500 ft north of the intersection of PA 58 and PA 368. We found a little information on the web specifically about the Buchanan Furnace. Apparently the remains of the furnace still exist on private property. There are detailed instructions for finding the furnace including GPS coordinates in the web address below. However, visitors to the furnace (not the Historical Marker of this Waymark) must get permission from the property owner as noted in the instructions. The Buchanan Furnace is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. See the web address below.
