The Mississippi State Memorial was erected on the site where General William Barksdale's Mississippi brigade waited before going into battle the evening of July 2nd.
The memorial was built to honor eleven infantry regiments, one infantry battalion, one cavalry regiment, and one artillery battery from the State of Mississippi.
The statue represents two infantryman, one has fallen wounded, while his comrade uses his musket to defend the fallen soldier and flag.
The memorial material is Lac Dubonnet Granite Bronze, sculptor was Donald Delue, and the contractor was Case in Italy. Memorial cost about $100,000.
