In a strange combination, this Greek Revival-Victorian building housed both the St. Mary’s Catholic School and the Sinai Hebrew Synagogue in two abutting structures.

St. Mary’s Catholic School was built first, in 1860, a Greek Revival with a central hall, two chambers, and a rear wing that has been removed.
The synagogue was added in 1876, a transitional building between Victorian and Greek Revival designs. The entrance to the west side is most imposing, an elaborate door and heavy entablature (portico roof) supported by four square columns.
Many of the Catholics and Jews in Jefferson were business people who came upriver from New Orleans. This building served both faiths. The building now houses the Jefferson Playhouse.
