This Italianate house was built in 1884 for JH Draughon, one of the first mayors of Texarkana, in what was then the most prominent residential area of the city. Now the Draughon-Moore House is one of the last residential structures left in these blocks.
The house’s unusual design began with the basement. The full basement was raised well above ground level. The central hall of the house, a two-story, octagonal rotunda, connected to one rectangular wing and three bays, each containing octagonal rooms. The wing housed the dining room, with the kitchen in the basement beneath and connected by a dumb waiter. This layout gave the house a floor plan resembling the stem and three leaves of a Club, leading to the house’s nickname, the ‘Ace of Clubs House.’
The house has been restored and is owned by the Texarkana Museum of Regional History. Tours are given Tuesday through Saturday, 10am-4pm. Admission is $6.
