The 14th Brooklyn, 84th New York Infantry Regiment, was the only unit in the Union Army to officially bear the name of a city.

Harry W. Mitchell, a member of the 14th Brooklyn was wounded during the battle and served as a model for the statue.

The material used for the statue is Standard Bronze, the statue sculptor was R. D. Barr, and the monument cost about $3600.
