NL / BE Uit de Triastijd kan je zo her en der een steensoort vinden die ook wel schelpkalk (zandsteen) heet, maar liever naar de Duitse term 'Muschelkalk' genoemd wordt, en ook is het in de Engelstalige geologische literatuur aanvaard als de term waarmee dit tijdvak Midden-Trias aangeduid wordt.

Uit deze periode van 247 tot 237 miljoen jaar geleden, wordt vooral in Duitsland en Polen Muschelkalk gewonnen. Hier is deze steensoort harder en beter geschikt als bouwsteen.

Het (nieuwe) Stadhuis van Rotterdam is niet geheel van 'Muschelkalk' opgebouwd, alleen de voorkant. Al het natuursteen is van Kirchheimer muschelkalksteen. Dit is een polijstbare kalksteen die gewonnen wordt in de omgeving van Würzburg, Duitsland. De 'plint' is van Graniet en is afkomstig uit Zweden en de fundering van beton. Aan de oostelijke zijde zijn fraaie exemplaren te zien van Brachiopoden. Deze armpotigen kwamen al voor inhet Cambrium en deze groep is dus al een half miljard jaar oud.
