The city built the Hamtramck Municipal Hospital in 1927 to accomodate the thousands of workers migrating to Hamtramck to work at the John and Horace Dodge automotive factory. In 1931 the Sisters of Saint Francis leased the hospital building from the city to run the facility for one dollar a year and renamed it Saint Francis Hospital. The hospital closed in 1969 and the building was converted into Hamtramck City Hall.
