This school building was designed by renowned school architect William B. Ittner. The school was built in 1911 to serve the black students of south St. Louis as Delaney School after Martin R. Delaney, a black physician and publisher. From 1940-1952 the school was called Virginia Avenue School for White Children. In 1952 it was renamed Maddox School. In 2003 the building was converted into 12 condominiums.
