NRHP Nomination Form

" Built from standard, but localized, plans created under U.S. Supervising Architect James A. Wetmore, the design features Classical proportions and fa9ade treatments, with simplified detailing that exhibits the influence of Art Deco and Moderne architecture. The symmetrical fa9ades include repeating bays separated by fluted pilasters, with steel casement windows and marble spandrels. The building's flat roof includes a simple cornice and parapet, decorated with minimal amounts of cast stone ornament.

The main entrance of the Jacksonville Post Office is centered in the 7-bay south facade. The outer bay on each end of the facade is sheathed primarily in buff brick, with corner coins, a smooth comice and a parapet cap all executed in limestone. A narrow, vertically proportioned steel casement window pierces each story in those bays, with the first-story window being taller, and a rectangular cast stone medallion is set between the two stories. The central 5 bays of the fa9ade are grouped together, projecting slightly from the end bays and sheathed entirely in limestone. The central bay includes the main entrance, a set of double doors with a transom, with a small semi-circular awning above it and another transom above the awning. A marble spandrel marks the area between the two stories, with a steel casement window on the second floor. Each of the other 4 bays is identical. A short marble spandrel, divided vertically in two, is between the limestone base and the first floor window, a tall, multiple light casement topped with a transom. The marble spandrel above and the second-floor window are identical to those in the center bay. The fluted pilasters separating each bay terminate under the simplified cornice, which features an inset band of ornament that includes an organic pattern on each end and the words "United States Post Office" across the center. A large shield-like ornament is centered on the otherwise undecorated parapet wall, which is capped with a band of stylized crenellation."
