A metal plaque on the protective railings around the village stocks and whipping post, Village Green, Gretton.
The plaque reads -
Gretton Stocks. Up to five people could be restrained in
these stocks, three clamped by the ankles and two
secured to the whipping post with manacles.
In 1857 a local man was placed here for failing to pay
a fine for drunkenness. A stocks warrant was required and
a policeman stood guard while they were in use.
